"strike" désigne ici une frappe (comme au bowling), et non une grève.
Je n'ai pas traduit car je pense que "ratched up the stakes" est une expression idiomatique dont j'ignore la signification. Ce doit être proche de "raviver les hostilités", ou quelque chose d'approchant.
Je ne pourrai valider cette traduction que lorsque je serai sûr de la signification de "ratched up the stakes"...
