Really, I never studied it formally. I just picked it up.

I keep getting asked how long I had studied a particular language, or how it is that I can converse in that language. I have a difficult time answering if I never really studied the language.

well no, there is not a big difference in this context but normally there is. and if you want to say it correctly "δε μελέτησα" is "δε σπούδασα" not "δε σπούδασε".
