Aber ist es so, dass, "sich historische Rückblenden und stilistische Anleihen mit zeitgenössischen Anregungen und personalem Duktus amalgamieren möchten, ohne je zu einer überzeugenden Synthese zu gelangen"?

But is it so..

But is it the case that "historical flashbacks and stylistic borrowings with contemporary ideas should mix with personal style without this mixture ever attaining any convincing synthesis" ?
Remarks about the translation
edit I think "suggestions" as I found in the dictionary really means "ideas". Möchten, here I translated as should, not can, I am not sure myself if this is the best word, but it fits with the rest of the sentence.

e.g, Much as we should like to ... So gerne wir möchten

"mix", instead of "mixed" in keeping with the infinitive use of amalgamieren.

Hi Lilly

It seems to be don't really understand what "stylistic loans" are.

The rest of the text, though somewhat complicated, seems to be about writing style.

"Can it be said to be true that "contemporary style and historical flashbacks can be mixed together with personal style without this mixture of styles ever creating a convincing synthesis"

Hope this helps

What do you think about it now?

This is good, but "Is it so that" doesn't sound like English. It would be better to say something like "Is it the case that" or "Is it true that".

I have to admit I got a bit confused reading this text and looked up "stylistic loans" to get some kind of idea what is being talked about here.

Maybe "style borrowings" would be better. Where did you look it up, itsatrap100?

Stylistic borrowings/loans is the correct term. You are right.

I looked it up in my Collins German dictionary. Anleihe = meaning 1) loan 2) bond

Online I found many more uses of "borrowings" than "loans".

There's nothing wrong with looking a word up in a dictionary. Shall we agree on "stylistic borrowings" then? I think we can accept this now.
