Oh, looking at the version in Br. Port I think the best wording could be:

"What a futile life to forever praise and salute you!"

Do you agree?

Yes, I thought about starting from "What" as well.

I'm just not sure if "forever" can be replaced this way. It doesn't refer to praise, but to a life, in my opinion.
BTW, in original, both "praise" and "salute" are nouns, not infinitives. Anyway, I believe they can be replaced by infinitives if it sounds better in English.
