The company was exempt from the tariffs normally levied on foreign imports. Wearing Stanley tapes clipped to one's belt has become something of a fad among young "do-it-yourselfers" abroad. By purchasing going concerns in foreign countries, Stanley was able to benefit from the advances those firms had made in manufacturing technology.
