An alternative translation would be "I am very much encouraged by seeing you at the meeting" if the person speaking the text is actually encouraged at the sight of the mentioned friends.

Hi cacue,

Based on the French version I understand it should be:
"I am very encouraged by seeing you at the meetings.
Welcome to the big (name) family"

Please, tell me if you agree.

Actually, I think they're pretty much the same...
But I guess "encouraged to see you" sounds a bit strange in English.

No, it doesn't sound strange, it just carries a different meaning.

"to be encouraged to do sthg" means: "be given hope or courage to do sth, while "be encouraged by sth" means: "be inspired with confidence by sth or some act" and I think that's the case of the original.
I understand that the person says s/he felt confident because s/he saw the other person at the meetings.

Francky, could you confirm this meaning?

Hi Lilian!

Any time I see the French comes from Québec, I think there could be some idiomatic expression, and I'm wondering whether "encouragé" here wouldn't mean "réconforté".

Hello Ian!

Could you please help us here with the meaning of "encouragé"? In France we don't use too much "encouragé" this way, we'd better say "cela m'a encouragé", or "cela m'a donné du courage". But is it really what it means here?

Thanks a lot!

...Did I get stuck with that "very" or what... If it were "I was very MUCH encouraged to see you", I would have got it right...
Sorry, my bad...

Hi cacue!

We'll add "much" before validating; I just had a doubt about the meaning of "encouragé" when used in Québec. The meaning you gave is probably the right one, but I just want to make sure and that's why I sent Ian a Cc, as he's a native French speaking Canadian. French spoken in Canada can be slightly different, they got a lot of expressions we don't use in France or in other French speaking areas. So let's just wait for Ian's opinion.

You guys don't use this expression in France/Belgium? It's quite common in Quebec, and natural English translations for it would be:
It's really nice to see you at the meetings
or
I'm so happy to see you at the meetings

It's not impossible that the speaker is particularly encouraged to do something by their presence, but basically in Quebec we can just use this expression to express our pleasure/happiness at seeing someone somewhere...

Hi Ian! Thanks a lot for your prompt answer!

Actually we don't use "encouragé" as an adjective, less again with "très". We rather use it as a past participle, as I said in my preview post ("cela m'a beaucoup encouragé de vous voir aux réunions..."

According to what you said then, there are two different possible contexts :

- "Pleasure", in which case we'd translate with "It's really nice to see you at the meetings
or
I'm so happy to see you at the meetings "

- "Courage", then we'd better translate with "I am very much encouraged by seeing you at the meetings" (cacue's translation)

So should I just make a note of it in the comment area?

Issue solved.

Cacue, the field for the remarks about the translation is intended to add information about different alternatives. Any other personal comment of gratitude must be posted in the message field under the translation, therefore I removed from the remarks this line addressed to Francky and Ian, OK?

Cacue wrote:

Thanks to Ian for teaching us the meaning of "encouragé" as commonly used in Quebecois French, and to Francky for having such a critical attitude that ensures the correctness of every translation within his power.
