Yup, there's a mistake in the original. It should be:
Aishiteiru hito o mamoru tameni boku wa ikiteiru.
And it does indeed exactly mean
I exist to protect the people/person I love.
However, the meaning in Japanese of "mamoru" has a wider meaning than just "to protect", so this text could also mean (and actually probably does mean):
I live/exist to take care of the person/people I love.
Nice raison d'etre...

I also edited the French version accordingly, the main change is that I switched singular with plural (ceux que j'aime' instead of "la personne que j'aime", as I'm quite sure this kind of saying is not limited to one person (Ian said moreover : "people"

"who I love" or "quien amo" both may mean singular or plural
