Sūrata’l-Baqarah (سورة البقرة "the Cow" is the second, and the longest, sura (chapter) of the Qur'an, with 286 ayat

The normal translation is as follows:

154 And call not those who are slain in the way of Allah "dead." Nay, they are living, only ye perceive not.

155 And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast,

156 Who say, when a misfortune striketh them: Lo! we are Allah's and lo! unto Him we are returning.

157 Such are they on whom are blessings from their Lord, and mercy. Such are the rightly guided.

So I found a difference between the traditional translation in the approved English language prayer books and your translation. Can you explain before we put it to a vote?

I think I had better get an oppinion from the administrators on this one since your translation is not the same as the accepted English translation of the same verses.

So admin.s what do you think? Shall we O.K. this alternative translation which was done in her University, or make her stick to the Book text?

I don't know Arabic but I think it begins from 155th verse, isn't it? if it is the 155th verse, it is correctly translated and sticks to the Book

and you don't need to check the "I would like an administrator to check this page" button to call admins dramati, you can do it by checking the boxes near their names and then posting your message (Carbon Copy ), so I'll switch it of

السلام عليكم dramati
سأعطي بعض التفاصيل لتفسير هذه الآية.
ففي تفسير ابن كثير يقول:"نبلوكم" أي أن الله تعالى يبتلي عباده أي يختبرهم ويمتحنهم. فكلمة "نبلوكم" من "أبلى" ويقال "ابتلاه" أي امتحنه واختبره.و" البلوة" هي الاختبار والاختبار يكون بالخير والشر. وعليه فترجمة "نبلوكم" تكون "We shall test you" أو "We shall try you" أو "We shall put you to test".

NADJET20, you asked for an administrator check, and then you wrote in Arabic. The administrators cannot read Arabic, so please translate what you wrote into either English or French. Thank you!

NADJET 20: I am sure your text conveys the meaning of the Arabic. I am only questioning the fact that there are differences in your translation and other orthodox translations. I only do this because when dealing with spiritual matters one must be very careful. History has taught us that wars have been fought because of a few changed words in a spiritual text. Whenever I find something written in the Bible, Tora, or Koran I have to be very cautious.

there are many translations of Quran on the net and they change slightly from each other in the usage of words, so I think we need Arabic experts help to decide on this,

this is NADJET20's translation:

Allah the Highest says :" Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits , but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere."

this is the one dramati found:
155 And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast,

this is the one I found:
155. Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere,-

I find this one with "lexigolos". I think nadjet's one is ok. This one is only the 155th verse.

hi all, i didnt see this one on my list, mmm
well i have to disagree with being strict to translating the Quran, i alwasy believed you take the part u understand and translate with the easiest language possible, because no matter what we do to create other copies of teh Quran, the is no such thing as a "credited or certified copy" of the Quran, and anyone interested to know more about it knows very well that eventually he has to learn arabic because the only certified copy is that in Arabic which does not have variations, so i would go easy on translating the possible interpretation, and i would make it clear that this is really our interpretation of 2008, because hitsory has taught us interpretation of the Quran did change over time, the text however, never really changed... so i think "fruits" or "crops" for "al thimar" both work just fine, and there is no need to make a big fuss out of it, you know what I mean?
