People may lose their incomes either temporarily or on a long-term basis at various times in their lives because of socio-economic reasons or physical reasons such as aging or physical disabilities or they may become ill. They may not be able to cope individually with these unfortunate situations when they are confronted with them. The basic goal of social security systems is to protect people against the risk of indigence and deprivation during difficult periods such as these.
