"Mettere" in this context could mean from "begin dating" to "live together", I would prefer the first meaning: Would you like to begin a close relationship?

We'd need the whole context to decide here. It could also mean "would you do "it" with me", for a work, "would you do this work with me?", or for instance for a birthday present, which then would mean "do you want to buy a present together, we'd share the costs"... Otherwise, without any context, the first translation is as good as the second.

I think here we might change a bit the structure of the sentence and translate with "Do you want to be my girlfriend/boyfriend?" as I consider it the best possible translation.
Anyway I also think that the translation proposed by mopalmaster could be accepted too (the one with "begin dating".
Iserb: that's colloquial italian, i'm pretty sure (as I'm italian) in this case "metterti con me" means "be my girlfriend/boyfriend".

I cut and paste a part of a message I already sent about this translation...
«"mettersi con" or "mettersi insieme" are expressions used when one creates a company or a couple (in case of dancers or lovers)... Even though the sense given by the translation could be in some cases approximately correct, I would translate it with the verbs "to team up", or "to pair (off/up)"...»
Anyway in this case I think that the sense proposed by mopalmaster, mistersarcastic and bamberbi could be fine.

I agree with what written above.. It's an informal way to say "Do you wanna be my girlfriend/boyfriend?"
