Neste contexto 'early slide' tem o sentido de um repentino deslize da vida. "To the letter" é uma expressão que significa seguir ou fazer algo como deve ser tipo "faça como manda o manual", "siga à risca", e parece explicar o sentido de 'early slide' que na frase seguinte diz: followed it to the letter - seguiu-se como se imaginava / como disseram

a cançao diz:
"She was prophesied for an early slide, followed it to the letter"
acredito que seja algo como:
"ela cumpriu a profecia a risca"
mas ainda falta o "early slide" que seria penso eu, quem/o que fez esta profecia...deu pra entender meu raciocínio?...rs

obrigado

Agora que você informou que é uma pessoa que está destinada a algo, acredito eu Hitchcock que 'early slide' tenha mesmo o sentido de um escorregão, tropicão, deslize, já que foi profetizado. Algo como um deslize da vida..

eu acho que seria: ela estava destinada a um escorregão / deslize prematuro, e assim sucedeu-se.

hmmm agora me parece ter mais sentido, eu estava entendo "for" por "by"

"ela estava destinada a um tropeço (da vida) prematuro seguido a risca"

acho que pode ser isso...

"She was prophesied
For an early slide
Followed it to the letter

Well kept beauty queen
If there, always seen
Still you thought she'd know better"

Isso! 'tropeço' também é uma palavra que pode se encaixar neste contexto...

Hi Angelus & Hitchy

I think that the "early slide" here has to do with the woman's social status.

A prophecy said she would "slide", so gradually but very rapidly she worsened (drugs? alcohol?) and she did so in a very meticulous manner (to the letter) - if there was an act she could perform to make things worse for her she did so.

If you can manage French I could give you the phrase and an explanation in French too.

Let me know, I've more or less translated it into French with rimes and all but, to get the same scant as the original I need a little more time. I can send you my first (not very riming, not the same scant...) translation into French in the meantime.

Bises
Ruth

Merci beaucouuuuuuuup Tantine!!

Just the way as I thought and translated..
You were more than helpful!

I can manage a little French so, if you wish you can give us the phrase in French.

It's not many, but I can share my points for this translation with you

Eu acho que pode haver uma outra tradução para esta frase, uma que fique melhor em Português.

Que tal: estar destinado a uma breve recaída? A um breve deslize.. Ou vocês acham que assim está bom??

Angelus,

Hi Angelus, thanks for your letter!

After reading the lyrics here, here is what I think the line(s) might mean:

People said she would soon "slide" (i.e. go from "high" to "low", by becoming unpopular(?) or starting to live a bad lifestyle, with drugs, etc(?), and then she certainly did exactly that, (i.e. she really did go into an early slide)...

Because the word "slide" is quite ambiguous, maybe you can find an equivalently ambiguous word in Brazilian too?

I think maybe
estar destinado
would mean
she was destined for
but the "to be prophesied" means rather that people said she would go into a slide soon, but it didn't necessarily have to happen, so it was not like a destiny...

Maybe you could translate it as "people said she would slide soon"?

I hope that doesn't make you more confused!

thanks for you colaboration Ian,
I think we're coming to the real sense of this sentence, Veronica Guerin (that I believe to be the "she" mentioned in this song) was murdered fighting the drug trade in her country, maybe the writer is talking about this event on this sentence, or prophesying what was about to happen to her...
but it is only what "I" believe it means....

"people said she would slide soon"
"people said she is risking your life"?

thanks you all

Hello Ian!

Thank you for your help though I really got kind of confused now.

I can't find another word in Portuguese to put in the place of 'destinado'.
I think it is translated in the way it should be. If we change to 'pessoas disseram que ela em breve teria um deslize' (people said she would slide soon), don't you think the original text would have to be different as well?

What Portuguese experts think of 'estar destinado' considering what Ian said?

I think "estar destinada" is better than "people are saying" or something like that...
"estar destinada" is really better for the translation of "to be prophesied"...

ela estava destinada a ter um tropeço logo
she was destined to have problems soon (maybe in her intent)?

Oh no, we should set our clocks ahead one hour now!

Well, here is the last time I will attempt to confuse you!

I have read and understood the Wikipedia article on Veronica Guerin, and I feel very confident that the lyrics have nothing to do with Veronica Guerin.

Guerin seems to have fought drugs in Ireland and was shot for it; she didn't go into "an early slide"; she was killed.

The lyrics are about a "Beauty Queen" who cares only about her image and her make-up, and lets time go by without noticing how much she's missing in life. This could not be referring to Guerin, who was not a "beauty queen," and was not shallow and certainly did not waste her time. Just read the Wikipedia article, and you'll understand that right away.

And Angelus, if there is no way to say (in the passive that "she was prophesied," then I think the active "people said that" is indeed the best translation. It does not mean "it was her destiny" in an abstract way. It really does mean (and only means) that, in a very concrete way, people said she would slide soon.

That's enough from me, I should think!

Ian, your explanation was more than enough!
The problem now is to see what do Br Portuguese experts think about it.
I think you are right because I can remember of a movie I've seen once. (Evil Dead 2)

In the movie a woman says "He was prophesied to have destroyed the evil" - and then a guy says: "Didn't do a very good job". It is clear that people said he would 'destroy the evil', but did not succeed.

Maybe the best Portuguese translation is "ser profetizado a ter um deslize prematuro" or "ser assunto de um deslize prematuro" (?)

Thank you very much Ian

Bom minha gente, acho que a peleja já se arrastou muito e eu achava que já havia validado essa tradução há muito tempo.
O Brasileiro aqui já está perfeitamente encaixado.
Foi!
