Criteria for finding a place in lists?

What is the criteria when someone's name reaches the lists ( of experts, or active translators)?

Also, shouldn't it appear somewhere in my profile which lists I have found a place in?

Suppose, I am eager to find a place in experts' list. Currently, I have to go to the list and scroll through it to see whether my name has made to it or not.

The expert rank is given for a language to users who accept to spend more time on cucumis checking the translations of other users. If you look on my profile page, you can see a blue star next to the french language, it means I'm an "expert" for french .

As for the top active users, it's automatic. The users are ordered by the sum of the points earned for their accepted translation. When they spent point to ask for a translation, it's not taken into account. It means a user can be the top active user and having 0 points.
You can view your activity level in your profile : the number of watermelons represents your activity.

some thoughts.

1. yeah, I noticed that blue star now. But, I think it is hardly noticeable because the lanuguage proficiency level itself has blue stars though a tad smaller.

seems selecting a different colour and a different icon (say, apple :-) ) might help. There can also be a tool tip on this that tells us what exactly is this star for. or a column heading of "included in expert list". It can also have link that takes us to expert page.

You said "spend more time here" to become expert. How much time is the threshold? maybe, some indication could be thought of telling us how much short of that "minimum time" we are, so that we could make up that shortfall.

for top active users, How many top users are listed in the page? or, is there is some minimum time/ translations, and whoever does above that will all be listed?

ok I will think about a more visible icon for expert languages, add a tool tip onit and show more clearly the expert rank next to the user name.

For the time needed to moderate the translations, I don't really know. The goal is to evaluate all translation in your expert language. It depends on your language and it depends of your habbits. Some prefer to come once a day, some prefer to come once a week, once a month etc...
Anyway, being expert can be just a try, if you don't like it or if it takes you too many time, you can go back.

chronological time should not matter.

The time one spends on cucumis should be the effective time whether one invests that in one week or in six months.

Anyway. I was not saying how to decide that. I wanted to know the decided criteria.

For that matter, it can be considered

- NOT to evaluate the translations done by persons who have once been declared an expert, or,

- maybe, their points can be directly credit even before evaluation, or

- their profile maybe have some larger text areas in which they can fill in their direct contact details so that other persons can contact them directly for paid/ unpaid jobs.

I mean that the "expert" level can be used by users as their USP and we should be able to highlight to other sites to seek paid translations from there. Anyone who comes to know that we had done so many translations at cucumis and have been declared expert here might feel much more like appointing us instead of advertizing his paid jobs at other translation sites and ending up with some non-sincere, amateur translator.

paid-job posters can even go throught the previous free translations done by an expert and assess the worth.

Maybe, cucumis iteself creates some interface for paid jobs and only cucumis-experts should be allowed to apply to them. That would make it more attractive for people to invest time and efforts here to reach expert levels.

maybe, cucumis might fetch some commissions on such interactions.

Earnings are important, otherwise how long will you run this site paying money from your own pocket.

Did you know you can already enter a text in your profile using the link "create article". You can enter what you wish in this article and it will be displayed in your profile.

Not all expert wish to get a paid job. Some of them are just native speakers, students etc... I think I must add an option "open to job offers" in the profile. And maybe add a page "Are you looking for a professional translation?" where you can search the cucumis members opened to job offers.

Note these are not easy improvements, it won't be up and running tomorow . But that's added in my todo list.

About the money, I've started displaying ads (only visible for non members), and it pays the server bill. That's OK for now as it's not my main job. If one day I work on cucumis full time, I will think about earnings more carefully .
