Adding a new target language

Sometimes I see a text I know I can translate into Dutch, my own. But it isn't the requested language. However I think that even not asked for, other members might find extra translations useful. I can't add a non-requested language because it simply isn't there and adding the language as a new target language seems to be taken as a request for translation, not an offer to translate and it'll only cost me points! What can I do about this?

The general principle of Cucumis.org is points-based translations. Everytime one requests a text to be translated, s/he looses points, which are transferred to the translator, who earns them.

It isn't common here to request a text to be translated (even by simply adding a new target language for an already existing text) and translating it by yourself. I know your intent is fine, but oferring a translation into an unrequested language probably wouldn't be understood - the requester of the original text wouldn't be notified of it, because the requester of the new target would be yourself.

No, you understood me wrong. I was searching and I found many (short) requests in lots and lots of languages, almost all. But I also found many that were not translated in all these languages. I thought it might be helpful to complete the short lists by adding other languages. For example: the word 'closed' was only translated in a few languages and e.g. not in Dutch. Of course I know the meaning of that word, but I guess not all members do. So when I thought I could add the Dutch languages as a kind of extra 'service' it turned out to be a translation request! Now people think I don't know the meaning of that word... :-(

Do you understand what I mean?

Yep, now I got it. These short translations (an except for the general rule that single word translations aren't allowed) are requested by cucumis, webmaster of Cucumis.org. And yes, he needs those requests translated in a number of languages, but I think he prefers to submit them in batches for not obfuscating the requests made by regular members.

One more thing: many of these short translations were already done into Dutch, but they don't appear at first sight in the request. Try clicking on a link that leads to a request page, and you'll see into how many languages a request was already translated.

Suzu, in addition to goncin's remarks, and to come bac to your initial post, you're right, there is not a way to add a new target langauge without requesting it. You can still reqauest the lang and transalte it just after. You only loose a few points (10%).

As goncin told you, this is not always very important to add a new target language if it's not requested, except for some requests where it's obvious the requester wish to see its text translated in as many languages as possible.
