Hello. I was wondering if you could tell me how much the placement in Hong Kong costs right now, and whether or not there is a salary deduction from the agency. Please help me - if, perhaps, only as a stepping stone - because I would really like to apply for Hong Kong. What is the process? Is there a one-month training involved? I hope that you can provide me with the information. Thank you.
Note sulla traduzione
"stepping stone ko lang ba" is ambiguous in the context of the source text, so the translation above is one possible interpretation of it.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your message. I just joined the site a few days ago, and I'm still learning the ins and outs of how this whole thing works.

Regarding your question - no, I didn't translate "steping stone ko lang ba". I thought about it, but it was a fairly ambiguous statement. (It's hard to tell whether 'steping stone' [sic] refers to the request for information or the position in Hong Kong.) Given that the translation request was "meaning only", I felt that leaving the translation of that phrase aside would not detract from the main message. Should I have put that in the translation notes?

Hi again Russell,
Thanks for your reply!
If we were to translate
steping stone ko lang ba
what do you suggest as a suitable translation for it?
I suppose we could put one possible translation -- perhaps the one you think might be the most probable? -- in the main Translation field, and the other (or others!) in the Remarks section, right under the translation itself.

Hi Russell,
Thanks for your reply!
You know, I think we have to include all the information that is in the original text in the translation too, i.e. as translators we can't edit anything out.
So what I meant was to put your best tentative translation in the main Translation field, but if you could think of any other possible meanings, to include them in the Remarks field under the translation. If you couldn't think of any other possible meanings, we can just put a note in the Remarks section that:
The translation of the phrase "steping stone ko lang ba" is tentative"
or some such explanation, and then leave it at that.
I'll correct your translation to include the new information, and if you think of any other possible meaning(s) for the phrase in question, please add them to the Remarks section.
Thanks in advance for your understanding!

Hi again, Ian,

Thanks for looking at this. It was one of those iffy things where I wasn't really sure how best to go about it, so I totally appreciate what you've done.

Hope you're having a good day.

Hi Russell,
Well, this one has been sitting here for too long: I guess we don't have enough Tagalog speakers here at !
I'll take your word for it anyway, and validate it now, because your English is perfect of course!
If you get any ideas about how it could be improved, just let me know, and I'll correct it for you later if you like!
Thanks for having waited this long!
