Pastabos apie vertimą
Suomeksi käytetään "rintaa" tässä sanonnassa, ehkä siksi, että juoksussa voittaa se, jonka rinta on edellä (ei jalka eikä pää). Toisaalta hiihdossa jalka on ratkaiseva, raveissa turpa jne.

Hi Mellla,

I think it should be: by an inch

In the original there no exact measure as "rinnan (from rinta)" means chest or breast which is the deciding factor in running for example. "inch" has the idea of winning by a small margin which is good.

A friend of mine asked me this and she had received a suggestion saying "to win by a foot". That of course could relate both to feet and measurement but it did not sound quite ok (at least the measurement is too long ). My dictionary gives "to win by a head (neck)" and for me that sounds better, but does it have a reference to horse races? If that comes first in mind then "inch" is a lot better.

This kind of expressions are hard to translate and discussion is needed, the books give possibilities but the best way to traslate varies from case to case. Here the context is a game where players (as people-like characters) compete in different ways and the translation should be quite neutral.

Hi Maribel

The best known expression to say that something was won by a narrow margin is that "To win by an inch".

If that's the meaning, I'll edit and validate it.

What do you say?

Hi,
yes you're right. Now that I think about it properly of course it's "by". I don't know how that didn't come to my mind at the first place. But anyhow, now it's correct and that's the good :-)
