We need to work on the verb tenses of this sentence.
If the text is telling about a fact in the past (that's what it seems to be), so the verbs should read:
"But when her partner had/went to play at Hell, Janne had to stay at home ...

I don't know what the source states, you may tell me if my idea is right.

"skulle" is the same as: ought, would, should (past tense)

So your suggest: "went to" sounds good.
