Per exemple, la primera frase jo la tradueixo a: "En aquesta direcció, no cerquem la finalitat, ja que aparentment és inabastable."

Per cert, no consideris pas el text poc entenedor. Simplement ni tu ni jo coneixíem aquest registre d'anglès, ja que no és pas la nostra llengua.
Un amic britànic al final m'hi ha ajudat. La part entre cometes entenc que vol dir: "Per ara (fins que arribin dies millors) amb mantenir el rigor (seguint amb diligència una tasca o una conducta) ja tenim una feina prou difícil."
