A brigade headed by Lieutenant Dmitry Ovtsyn and Assistant Navigator Dmitry Sterlegov worked on the coast of Arctic Ocean between Ob and Yenisei rivers, while brigade, led by Navigator Fyodor Minin operated to the east from Yenisei. Two companies explored River Lena basin: squad of Lieutenants VasilyPronchishchev, Chariton Laptev and Navigator Semen Chelyuskin on the west; and brigade of Lieutenants Peter Lasinius and Dmitry Laptev on the east. Two teams worked on the Far East. A special group of scientists - members of the Russian Academy of Sciences was assembled for studying the inland areas of Eastern Siberia and Kamchatka. A team, led by geodesists Peter Skobelzhyn and VasilyShatilov, was searching for a convenient river route from Verhneudinsk to Okhotsk. Brigade of Captain Martin Shpanberg worked at the description of Kuril Islands, Okhotsk Sea coast, and routes to Japan. Search for a route to Northern America, exploration and description of the North Pacific islands became the primary goals of marine group, led by Captain-Commander Vitus Bering and Captain-Lieutenant Aleksey Chirikov.
