Pile and Trussels
The pile (bearing the obverse) had a spike on the end, which could be driven into a large tree stump, before which sat the coiner, who then positioned the hot, malleable flan on the pile with a pair of tongs. The trussel, or reverse die, was then positioned over the flan. The hammerman used great force to strike impressions simultaneously into both sides of the coin.
